Cabelo (1967) is a Brazilian artist who lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. He is a poet, musician, and visual artist. He considers his drawings, paintings, sculptures, songs, performances, videos, and installations as manifestations of poetry. According to Luiz Camillo Osorio, “these various lines of force within his poetics focus on an expressive event always marked by the striking presence of the body.” His works take place both in museums and on the streets. He is currently developing the project Luz com Trevas: an exhibition, a concert, and an album that merge into a single work.
He participated in the 24th and 33rd São Paulo Biennial (2004 and 2017), 9th Mercosul Biennial (2009), and X Documenta de Kassel (2017), among others. His works are part of collections such as Gilberto Chateaubriand and Joaquim Paiva at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro – MAM RJ, Instituto Pipa, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Banco Itaú S.A Collection, and João Sattamini – Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói.
EXUberância (2021) is part of a homonymous series, inspired by a song of the same name that Cabelo composed and performs to open his album Luz com Trevas. The images emerged during a cycle of conversations with babalorixá Robson Cruz and historian Luiz Antonio Simas. Exu represents the dynamic principle, movement and change. He is the messenger, bearer of Axé. The communicator, lord of paths, markets, and crossroads.
