Caroline Ricca Lee (1990) is an artist whose practice investigates memory, archiving, and fiction within Asian diasporas in Brazil and Latin America. Their research focuses on unofficial histories preserved in alternative records such as personal archives, ancestral memorabilia, family photographs, and corporeal cartographies. They work with sculpture, installation, writing, performance, and video. The syncretic aesthetic of their work reveals a repertoire in which Asian ancestry and Brazilian culture collide, giving form to a noisy visuality intrinsic to the tapestry of a multicultural, diasporic identity.
They received the ISOLA SICILIA Award 2023 at the 30th Artissima Fair (Turin, Italy) and were selected in 2025 by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia South America. They have been an artist-in-residence at Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Waldberta, Germany (2016); Fondazione Oelle, Italy (2024); Pivô Pesquisa, Brazil (2024); IASPIS, Sweden (2025); and La Becque, Switzerland (2025).
Their exhibitions include rest at risk, Pivô, São Paulo (2025); Recollection of Dreams, Tube Culture Hall, Milan (2024); The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean, America’s Society, New York (2024); terra abrecaminhos, Sesc Pompéia, São Paulo (2023); 1º Salão Nacional de Arte Contemporânea de Goiás, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Goiás, Goiânia (2022); and 31ª Mostra de Exposições, Centro Cultural São Paulo, São Paulo (2021).
About Double-Edged Dream (2025), Caroline Ricca Lee says: “Among unofficial archives, the body might be the one that carries the greatest archival potential. However, when the maintenance of well-being is continually crossed by structural, historical, and everyday violence, how do diasporic bodies negotiate between care and control, dream and trauma, rest and risk? From these tensions, Sonho de Dois Gumes encapsulates the ambiguity between memory and forgetfulness, between the domestic gesture and the symbolic cut.”
