Gabriella Marinho (1993) lives and works in São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. The artist, who has a journalism degree with a specialization in African Literatures from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, uses clay, earth, and soil as both material and philosophical starting points for her work. Experimenting with textures and techniques tied to Afro-Brazilian and Afrodiasporic identities, Marinho explores organic and abstract forms in both her sculptural works and her earth-based paintings. Thus, her practice combines a subjective and embodied relationship with nature, which she researches and collects from the territories she passes through to compose her work.
Cauri #1/5 (2022) is part of a series of the same name composed of terracotta ceramic sculptures that invite reflection on memory and ancestry, articulating symbols that pay homage to presence and reclaiming territory as part of the body that shapes Afro-Brazilian histories.
The work was exhibited in Hu – a minha alegria atravessou o mar, MAC Niterói (2022), and Carvões acesos, Galatea (2025).
