Alves (1996) lives and works in Salvador – BA, Brazil. A self-taught artist, his painting practice explores, in an oniric manner, elements of Brazilian botany and its relationship with still life painting. Trained as a Technician in Administration at Centro Estadual de Educação Profissional em Gestão Severino Vieira, he attended the course Desenho de Figura Humana [Figure Drawing] at UFBA under the guidance of Professor Onias Vieira Camardelli.
He has been part of notable exhibitions such as Dos Brasis: Arte e pensamento negro (curated by Igor Simões, Lorraine Mendes, and Marcelo Campos) at SESC Belenzinho, São Paulo (2023); Ensaio para Museu das Origens at Itaú Cultural, São Paulo (curated by Paulo Miyada, Izabela Pucu, and associate curators Ana Roman, Daiara Tukano, and Thiago de Paula Souza) in 2023; and Brasil futuro: As formas da democracia at Centro Cultural Solar do Ferrão, Salvador, curated by Lilia Schwarcz, Márcia Tavares, Rogério Carvalho, and Paulo Vieira, with associate curators Adriana Cravo, Daniel Rangel, Acervo da Laje, and Zumvi Arquivo Afro Fotográfico. In 2025, he takes part in Afro-brasilidade: uma homenagem a dois Valentins e a um Emanoel, FGV Arte’s fifth exhibition, curated by Paulo Herkenhoff and João Victor Guimarães. His works are currently part of Acervo da Laje, the first museum in Salvador’s Subúrbio Ferroviário area.
O lençol botânico no varal (2025) is a work created intuitively from the artist’s memories and experiences in Salvador’s Subúrbio Ferroviário, where, while walking through the neighborhood, he would see large yards with hanging washing lines. In the foreground, an exotic, geometric sheet composed of botanical cutouts can be seen, along with a long branch resting on two green plants with unusual leaves. In the left corner, the curves of the branch form a window through which a sea is born, where an exotic fish swims. In the sky above it, clouds with blue gradients. Departing from the suburbs’ fauna and flora, the artist created a singular, dramatic, and surrealist narrative.
