Guilherme Almeida (2000) lives and works in Bahia, producing paintings, sculptures, and installations. He is part of a generation of artists who use objects from their daily lives to foreground the history, memory, and lived experience of the Black body.

With a realist approach to his research, Almeida reflects on the experience of his own body and space, using family albums, narratives, and familiar objects, and starting from real people to strengthen and give visibility to Afro-Brazilian people’s lives. At the same time, his work highlights figures of historical and cultural importance, such as intellectuals, activists, and artists, in a research that engages with complex and ironic questions around power and space.

He also explores values of freedom and beauty within Afro-Brazilian families, the dreams of Black children, and the everyday moments of life filled with affection, love, achievement, and unity.

In 2017, he participated in painting workshops at the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia, where he began working with the medium, and in 2018 he entered the Universidade Federal da Bahia to pursue a degree in fine arts.

O mar (2025) arises from the desire to revisit the artist’s first paintings, which were abstract, representing water in a way that revealed only color. The synthesis results from the subtraction of factors, layers, or forms essential to its existence. The work is part of the artist’s solo exhibition Mar Caymmi at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Bahia in 2025.
