Ana Hortides (1989) lives and works between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Her artistic practice investigates the political and social dimensions of the home, intimacy, popular civil construction, architecture, and the suburbs, exploring these through material, conceptual, and symbolic lenses.

Her work is part of collections such as Salón ACME (Mexico), Museu de Arte do Rio, and Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (RJ). She participated in artist residencies at FAAP (2023) and Pivô Arte e Pesquisa (2022), both in São Paulo. She was nominated for the Prêmio PIPA (2021) and was awarded grants such as Fluxos Fluminenses (2024), Sesc Pulsar (2023), and Fomento Carioca (2022).

Recent exhibitions include the solo show Casa Própria (Paço Imperial, RJ, 2025) and group shows such as Essa cidade sempre maravilhosa (Galeria Nara Roesler, 2024); Meu Lugar (Museu de Arte do Rio, 2024); MUAMBA – Brazilian Traces of Movement (Ruby Cruel, London, 2023); Outras Imaginações Políticas (MAM Rio, 2022); REBU (EAV Parque Lage, 2021–2022); Casa Carioca (Museu de Arte do Rio, 2020–2021); and the public art project Ao Ar, Livre (São Paulo, Chile, and Mexico, 2020).

She is a PhD candidate in arts at Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), holds an MA in contemporary art studies from Universidade Federal Fluminense (2016), and a BA in cultural production from the same institution (2012). She also studied at Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro.

Shooting star (2025) is part of the Platibanda series, in which Hortides investigates popular architecture and the façades of self-built houses in Brazil. The sculpture is covered with ceramic shards, a material that recalls the improvised ornamental traditions of platibandas in suburban and peripheral neighborhoods, re-signifying their materiality and form in an artistic gesture.

By taking the shape of a shooting star, the work creates tension between the cosmic and the domestic, between the fleeting moment and the permanence of the ornament. Through the dialogue between architecture and sculpture, the artist builds a critical poetics around the notions of home, memory, and self-construction, revealing their symbolic and political power.
