Juliana dos Santos (1987) holds a PhD in arts from the Instituto de Artes da Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP). She currently presents her solo exhibition Temporã at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo and takes part in the 36th São Paulo Biennial. She participated in the Public Residency Program at Sertão Negro, organized by the 35th São Paulo Biennial (2023). In 2018, as an artist-in-residence, she taught in the Department of Contextual Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, Austria.

Untitled (Experiência Azul) (2020) engages with the artist’s curiosity about the interrelation between the blue color of the flower Clitoria ternatea and the Black and Afro-diasporic experience in Brazil. In the words of Mateus Nunes: “Her work is driven by the desire to challenge limiting Eurocentric traditions of perception and representation through the exploration of sensory expansions (…) The blue, usually associated with states of elevation, beauty, and intangibility in certain cultural contexts, appears in the artist’s works through complex stages of processing the Clitoria ternatea flower, cultivated by a family from São Félix, in the Recôncavo Baiano, with whom she has collaborated for years: Nilton Cesar dos Santos and Edilene Costa de Jesus dos Santos.”
