Karim Aïnouz (1966) is an award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter, and visual artist. His most recent feature film, Motel Destino, was selected for the official competition at the Cannes Festival (2024). Before that, he presented Firebrand (2023) and Mariner of the Mountains (2021), also in Cannes, as well as Invisible Life (2019), winner of Un Certain Regard.
At the Berlin Film Festival, he premiered Nardjes A. (2020) and Central Airport THF (2018), the latter receiving the Amnesty International Award. His feature Futuro Beach (2014) was screened in competition at the Berlinale, while Love for Sale (2006) and Madame Satã (2002) were highlighted in Venice and Cannes, consolidating his international career.
Beyond cinema, he has created documentaries and installations exhibited in institutions such as the Whitney Museum, New York; Bienal de São Paulo; Bienal de Sharjah; and Videobrasil. He co-wrote Behind the Sun (Walter Salles), Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures (Marcelo Gomes), and Lower City (Sérgio Machado).
Aïnouz holds a degree in architecture from UnB, a master’s in film studies from NYU, and completed the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. He has taught at Princeton, MIT, NYU, and the San Francisco Art Institute. He has also served as a juror and mentor at international festivals and labs, including Sundance and CENA 15 (Porto Iracema das Artes), where he has supported new generations of Brazilian filmmakers since 2013.
