Thomaz Rosa (1989) employs and evokes symbols and experiences from both official and unofficial histories of painting through the recovering of motivations from pop and modern art. Error and accident are intrinsic elements of his practice, juxtaposed with meticulously calculated painted equations. This seemingly ambiguous configuration allows for multiple readings and meanings toward a cohesive final unity. Rosa incorporates three-dimensional elements into his canvases in a compositional gesture that distorts the boundaries between pictorial space and objecthood.

Rosa holds a degree in arts from UNESP, São Paulo. His recent solo shows include Conjuntos (Castiglioni Fine Arts, Paris, 2024); Um de Um Par / Uno di Una Coppia (Castiglioni, Milan, 2023); A volta da sorte (Quadra, São Paulo, 2023); and Resenha (Quadra, Rio de Janeiro, 2021). He has also participated in group exhibitions such as De viés (Quadra, Rio de Janeiro, 2024); Pessoas negras são o silêncio, eles não podem entender (GDA, São Paulo, 2024); Refundação (Ocupação Nove de Julho, São Paulo; Museu da Inconfidência, Ouro Preto, 2023); and Setas e turmalinas (Casa de Cultura do Parque, São Paulo, 2022). His work has been part of Museu de Arte do Rio’s collection since 2024.

flores no interior negro (2020) is part of a series that explores the effort of the modern encounter, in a Matissean sense, between drawing and color. Here it can be observed through suggesting silhouettes that outline a figure distinguished from its background.
