Helen Scheunemann (1962) lives and works in São Paulo. She holds a degree in social sciences from FFLCH-USP, and has worked in research, audiovisual production, and the book market for many years.
Her work investigates the relationship between color, pictorial matter, space, and light, and her process involves studying the motif chosen to paint. Connected to lived experiences and memories, her reflection on how to paint, how to construct the pictorial surface, select the palette, forms, and composition plays a key role in her research. Her themes include landscapes, interiors, and still lifes, all permeated by the atmosphere derived from the painterly surface and from a common painting method.
The artist began her artistic training in ballet, and in 2017 she turned her focus to painting, under the guidance of André Ricardo. She has participated in group exhibitions such as O silêncio da tradição: pinturas contemporâneas, Centro Maria Antônia, São Paulo (2025); Contra-horizonte, Galeria ArteFasam, São Paulo (2025); Salão de Artes da Prefeitura Municipal de Praia Grande (2025); 21 Território da Arte de Araraquara (2024); Mostra Arpejos, São Paulo (2024); Parede do Artista (2023); and A Cor da Dúvida, New Gallery (2023).
Untitled (2024) evokes a nocturnal landscape where compositional elements of light and vegetation appear, with events occurring along the edges of the support. The construction of the pictorial surface emphasizes both the placement and removal of pictorial mass, suggesting a confluence between subject matter and painting method.
