Alice Shintani (1971) lives and works in São Paulo. With a background in computer engineering, she began her artistic practice in the early 2000s. Her practice takes painting as an open field of experimentation, expanding into installations, collective actions, urban interventions, and exhibition-based situations. Her works articulate playful strategies and an apparent simplicity, shifting modes of circulation, valuation, and visibility in art, as well as the relationships between artwork, space, and audience. Between 2013 and 2016, she worked as a street vendor selling brigadeiros in the streets and markets of São Paulo’s financial district, an experience that has since permeated her production and generated developments such as the “Mata” and “Menas” series, presented at the 34th São Paulo Biennial and its traveling editions (2020–22).

Among her recent projects are Montanha e Vale, Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro, Belém, Recife, and Brasília (2026–27); Echo, SMU Pollock Gallery, Dallas, USA (2026); Prayer Birds, Flags Project, ASCO/A, New York, USA (2024); COMPRO OURO, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, São Paulo (2019); and Tuiuiú, Associação Brasileira de Encadernação e Restauro, Biblioteca Mário de Andrade, and Praça Dom José Gaspar, São Paulo (2017).

She has participated in programs at the Complexo Hospitalar do Juquery, Franco da Rocha (2019), Delfina Foundation, London( 2017), Valand Academy, Gothenburg (2017), Hablar En Arte, Madrid (2018), and Rumos Artes Visuais Itaú Cultural, São Paulo (2008–09).

Her works are included in institutional collections such as LUMA Arles Foundation, SESC São Paulo, Fundação Bienal de São Paulo – Acervo Wanda Svevo, Palácio do Itamaraty, and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.
