Wine Glass (2022) is part of a sequence of sculptures in which the artist represents everyday objects that engage with the duality between container and content, interior and exterior, fused into a single entity. Iran do Espírito Santo states that, for the first time, he added a polished surface to one of these works, referencing the reflective quality of liquids and producing a small circular mirror.
Iran do Espírito Santo (1963) has lived and worked in São Paulo since 1981 and graduated in Fine Arts from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP) in 1986. His practice encompasses drawings, mural paintings, installations, and sculptures.
He has participated in the Venice Biennale (48th and 52nd editions), the São Paulo International Biennial (19th and 28th editions), and the 6th Istanbul Biennial. Among his group exhibitions are Present Tense: Nine Artists in the Nineties, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Troposphere, at Beijing Minsheng Art Museum; and Chosen Memories – Contemporary Latin American Art from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Gift and Beyond, at MoMA. He has held solo exhibitions at Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, and Irish Museum of Modern Art.
